Our studio is like a casino, no windows, bright lights, and time goes warp speed. And it's amazing. Jamming to whatever comes up on Pandora, cutting and molding cardboard through endless paper cuts and hot glue burns, and getting to know those diligently working around me, through the delirium and creative energy. I truly love it.
But when my roommate reminded me that I promised to make cupcakes for her fundraiser tomorrow I had to put it aside for as short of time as possible, and jam out some halfway pretty treats.
I remembered a trick my boss taught me about dipping the frosting in sugar to make it look crystalline. With it being winter time I decided to expand on that, make them white like little snowballs, and make a complementary cupcake with a simple swirl and silver dragees.
Overall I'm happy with the rapid turnout. So if ever you need a quick and beautiful cupcake, grab the sugar and sprinkles and don't hold back!
So beautiful! How do you make the larger cupcake in the middle? Is there a special pan?
ReplyDeleteGosh I wish I could say that I had a special pan for those larger cupcakes because that would have been much easier. My roommate and I were in a bind and those were the only cupcake liners we had around the house. First try: I laid them out on a cookie tray close together and filled them. They looked fine but about 5 minutes into baking, it looked like a sheet cake with pieces of paper poking out. Not great. 2nd Try: I triple lined the cups and those turned out fine, but a huge waste of liners. Now I'll always keep the standard sizes on hand!
DeleteThese are so pretty! What a great idea. Did you use the same amount of sugar in the frosting or did you use less because you sprinkled the sugar on top?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you asked that question because I honestly didn't think about it! Nor did I try one because I'm trying to stay away from sweets. Well I hope they still tasted ok and I'll definitely consider that for next time!
DeleteThose look great! I like the fact that you talked about fitting the baking into your busy school life. I love baking, but I often need a promise to someone else make myself make the time.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely with you there. It's similar with college cooking, usually I have to be cooking for someone else to actually pull out the pots and pans. It's a tough balance, so I guess I'll just have to keep promising treats!
DeleteThank you for sharing more about your baking! Do you work for a bakery or on your own?
ReplyDeleteHi molly, I currently work on my own, with the assistance of my talented roommate. She typically bakes, and I typically decorate, but sometimes the roles blend. It's a lot of fun, but we usually have to say no to requests during the school year, so its not what I'd call a thriving business (since we operate 3 months a year). I would love to work for an expert to be able to learn from them.
